Bushwick Sound Map

As part of SFPC's 2014 Poetic Science fair, Ida Benedetto and I put together a workshop on sound, listening and map making. Participants created an auditory map of the surrounding neighborhood using simple recorders, which were later placed on a 5'X3' hand-drawn map and could be played back by other visitors - by pressing the speakers - allowing people to reimagine, and recreate the auditory experience of their neighborhood. Additionally, longer recordings were also made on a more traditional field recorder, and visitors could remix these recordings as the backdrop for the auditory map, using a simple midi controller and max patch.
